Terlahir dengan nama Senggiku Maru, dari keluarga pengusaha pada masa pemerintahan Samurai di Jepang, Ikkyū dititipkan oleh ibunya (Iyono Tsubone) pada sebuah kuil (yang digambarkan sebagai Kuil Ankoku di daerah Fukuyama - Jepang) di bawah pengasuhan bhiksu Osho agar terhindar dari bahaya.
